What is it?

The European regulation 2016/679 on personal data protection (called General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR), was adopted on 27th April 2016. It aims to standardise the practices concerning personal data protection within countries of the European Union, as well as reinforcing the protection of its citizens. Superseding the Data Protection Directive 95/46/CE of 24th October 1995, and modifying the law 78-17 of 6th January 1978 (the French legal reference document up to then), it has been in force since 25th May 2018.

Who is it for?

The GDPR is applicable to any public or private company, supplier or sub-contractor, established on European soil, as well as those established outside of the European Union, as soon as they offer goods or services to people of the European Union. The companies concerned can be from any industrial and economic sector, as soon as they process personal data.
